Theme: Identifying New Management, Education, Leadership and Technology
Paradigms for a Conflicting World

Colleague:

As we are entering a new decade, public and private sector companies are confronting numerous challenges including the search for new paradigms in management, education, leadership and technology. Throughout the world governments, systems are failing, breaking down. We now find ourselves with high unemployment, rising federal deficit, closed businesses, uninsured citizens, reduced wages, a large temporary workforce, corporate downturns, hypercompetitive environments, business closings, devastating global financial and economic crises, and natural disasters. These are just some of the factors that threaten the survival of individuals and organizations in highly volatile and complex environments. They are also some of the factors that make the dominant paradigms in management, education, leadership that manifested and have prevailed for more than 50 years when organizations were operating in environments significantly different from the socio-economic and politician conditions that are confronting contemporary organizations. In many cases, management models of the past 50 years have become obsolete and are simply not working. With respect to rapidly changing technologies that have become one of the most important elements of the organizational infrastructure how do you, as a management educator, scholar, and practitioner respond to the challenges presented by infrastructures that are on the edge of chaos and obsolescence; security systems that are ineffective or ignored, creativity that is lacking; welfare that is over burdening, incompetence that rules in business and politics, entrepreneurship and private enterprises that are struggling, an educational system that is at a loss to provide the tools, right skills and prepare people for professions that meet the needs of the rapidly changing world, and a pervasive leadership crises in all corners of business, we ask,

  • “Where are we going in management, leadership, education and technology and how did we get there”?
  • “When will the economy pick up”?
  • “What will it be”?
  • “How do we educate the next generation of leaders for leadership fitness and organizational effectiveness”?
  • “Why is money losing its motivational power, especially among Gen X and Millennials and what alternative factors motivate managers in the younger generations”?
  • “How will corporations function when a large number of baby boomer executives retire”?
  • “How can organizations retain and benefit from the organizational memory stored in the individual and collective experience of baby boomer workers and managers”?
  • “Will academia formulate research questions and conduct studies that will provide the solutions for the multitude of problems and challenges confronting managers, and organizations”?
  • “Where should we be going with our existing theories and models”?
  • “How do practitioners respond to the call for new paradigms”?
  • “What’s the right thing to do”?

We invite you, your associates, students, to participate in this year’s conference by establishing and expanding your presence through cutting-edge, provocative interactions with like-minded colleagues. It will be your scholarship and concerned others who will provide the necessary solutions to our many problems. Do not hesitate bringing yourself to fore! Shuck off cloned and instituted paradigms unsuitable in today’s world of ineffectual management, education and leadership breakdowns quite often failing to meet technology’s avant garde innovativeness. Your ideas, research and solutions are what may well be the solutions. Again, do not hesitate. Attend! Share your vision with us by presenting a paper, panel, symposium or workshop! Dare to be different.

Cordially,

Willem A. Hamel, Ph.D. I/O Psychologist and CEO
